Soldier killed, 21 wounded in bomb attack in SE Turkey

Xinhua, May 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

One Turkish soldier was killed and 21 others wounded in a car bomb attack hitting the country's paramilitary gendarmerie headquarters in southeastern Turkey Sunday, Turkish media reported on Monday.

The militants of the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) staged the car bomb attack against the gendarmerie headquarters in Dicle town of Diyarbakir province, leaving one Turkish soldier killed and 21 soldiers and personnel injured, including one in serious condition, private Dogan news agency reported.

Military residential buildings in the area were also damaged in the blast, according to the report.

Turkish security forces who headed toward the Dicle town in the aftermath of the blast also reportedly came under attack, said the report.

Since a two-year cease-fire between the government and the PKK disintegrated last July, Turkish security forces have launched a major campaign against the PKK in southeast Turkey, leaving over 260 members of Turkey's security forces and thousands of PKK members dead.

The PKK, waging its separatist war against Turkey since 1984, is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union. Endit
