Indian leader makes two-day visit to Papua New Guinea

Xinhua, April 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Asia-Pacific is ever increasing its importance as India makes a high-profile visit to the region.

Indian President Pranab Mukherjee began a two-day visit to the pacific nation of Papua New Guinea on Thursday for talks with Prime Minister Peter O'Neill on deepening the bilateral relationship.

The visit follows O'Neill's visit to India last year where he was offered radars and patrol aircraft for coastal surveillance and maritime security.

"We will continue the exchanges of high-level visits between Papua New Guinea and India to further deepening the spirit of friendship and cooperation between the two countries," O'Neill said in a statement.

Both leaders are expected to witness the signing of a number of agreements to help the nation's battle against the current HIV/AIDS epidemic as well as other ancillary infrastructure and governmental deals.

Mukherjee departs PNG for New Zealand on April 29 in a bid to increase cooperation in the agriculture, education and technological space. Endit
