Xinhua, April 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Kyrgyz parliament elected on Wednesday Chynybay Tursunbekov as its new speaker, the parliament press service announced Thursday.

Tursunbekov, leader of the ruling Social Democratic Party, received 88 votes, while the other candidate Iskhak Masaliev from Onuguu-Progress Party received 26 votes.

The parliament failed to elect a new speaker earlier on April 20, when two candidates from Kyrgyzstan Party and Onuguu-Progress Party won 51 votes respectively.

The previous Kyrgyz Parliament Speaker Asylbek Jeenbekov resigned voluntarily on April 13 after his brother, Sooronbai Jeenbekov, became prime minister of the country.

The Kyrgyz parliament consists of 120 members elected for a five-year term. The last parliamentary elections in Kyrgyzstan were held on Oct. 4, 2015. Endi
