1 killed, 5 injured in severe thunderstorms in states of Texas, Oklahoma

Xinhua, April 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

One woman was killed and five others were injured after powerful storms and tornadoes lashed out at the southern U.S. states of Texas and Oklahoma starting from Tuesday night, local TV station ABC13 reported on Wednesday.

Authorities have confirmed that a 62-year-old woman was killed as a tree fell on her home after strong storms on Wednesday morning rolled through Tomball, a city in the Harris County in southern Texas.

Trees also sliced through at least a half dozen homes. Some homeowners were asked to evacuate for safety reasons.

The National Weather Service said that the storms that hit the Tomball area possibly sparked powerful tornadoes that uprooted the trees.

In northern Texas, five people were injured and at least a half dozen homes suffered structural damage on Tuesday night after a strong thunderstorm tore through the Grayson County.

The three cities of Howe, Whitesboro and Bells in the Grayson County were mostly impacted by the storms, also possibly by tornadoes.

In neighboring Oklahoma, severe thunderstorms passed through the state on Tuesday night, accompanied by large hailstones on some areas.

The storms knocked out power to more than 20,000 homes and businesses Tuesday night. By noon Wednesday, 7,369 homes and businesses remained without power. Endit
