Two thirds of all flights canceled at Munich airport due to strike

Xinhua, April 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Around two thirds of all arriving and departing flights at Munich airport were canceled on Wednesday due to the walkout in the public sector over a wage dispute, affecting tens of thousands of passengers.

According to an announcement of the Munich airport, due to the announced strike activity, approximately 700 flights were canceled since early in the morning.

"We therefore advise passengers to contact their airline well in advance to check their flight status. If your flight is canceled and no alternative booking option is available, please do not come to the airport," the announcement noted.

Besides Munich airport, Frankfurt airport was also hit hard. About 400 of all planned flights were deleted there.

In Munich, a manager with Chinese airline Air China said no Air China flights were canceled.

The strike is due to a wage dispute. Germany's Ver.di trade union is demanding six percent more money and an increase in the training allowance to 100 euros (113 U.S. dollars) per month for approximately 2.14 million public employees, having rejected an offer of a wage increase of three percent over two years.
