European delegation in Tripoli to support Libya's unity gov't

Xinhua, April 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

A European delegation led by the EU ambassador to Libya arrived in Tripoli Tuesday to show Europe's support for Libya's unity government.

"We strongly encourage the Presidential Council to assume its full role as an executive authority. There is no time to waste. Libya faces many challenges that require fast processes and Libyans deserve to see their aspirations realized after so much suffering and hardship," EU ambassador to Libya Natalya Apostolova said after the delegation met with the UN-backed unity government.

During a press conference following the meeting, the German Ambassador, Christian Moch, declared that the EU is willing to support Libya unconditionally and Italy's envoy said that a conference will be held in Rome in support of the unity government.

Several European officials are visiting Tripoli in order to express Europe's support of the unity government.

"We stressed the importance of the role of the House of Representatives and we hope it will fulfill the responsibility set by the Libyan political agreement," Apostolova added.

The unity government was named based on a UN-peace agreement signed by Libya's political rivals, in order to end the country's political division, and it arrived in Tripoli on March 30 from Tunisia.

The unity government is expected to stabilize the chaos in Libya as well as fight against the increased presence of the Islamic State (IS) militant group. Endit
