1.3 mln Brazilians sign up to support removal of parliament speaker

Signatures from 1.3 million Brazilians demanding the dismissal of Chamber of Deputies President Aduardo Cunha were presented to the house's Ethics Council on Tuesday.

The signatures were presented by representatives of Avaaz, a nongovernmental civil rights group.

Cunha is believed to be the leader of a large center-right parliamentary section that has spearheaded the impeachment of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.

A Chamber of Deputies decision to proceed with the impeachment process against Rousseff seems to be accelerating public call for Cunha's removal.

According to Avaaz's campaign coordinator Diego Casaes, up until the Chamber of Deputies evaluated the impeachment application against Rousseff on April 17, the petition to remove Cunha had only received around 300,000 signatures. However, this number has rocketed to 1.3 million signatures in the past few days.

Apart from the public call for his removal, Cunha is also being investigated for alleged links with a corruption scandal of government-owned oil company Petrobras.

Last week, Attorney General Rodrigo Janot announced that six processes involving Cunha are currently being investigated. Endi
