IGAD member states harmonize regional medicine regulations

Xinhua, April 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

Officials from member states of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have met in Khartoum, Sudan, for their second edition conference on medicine and pharmaceutical regulations.

The two-day conference has brought together IGAD member states national regulatory authorities and development partners, aiming to enable and ensure safety, quality and efficiency of medical products by supporting functional and efficient regulatory systems, according to a statement from the East African regional bloc on Tuesday.

This can be achieved through the revision, strengthening and adoption of existing policies within the IGAD member states to be in line with the continental and global medicine regulatory systems for improved health care in the region, said the statement.

The conference is part of the African medicines regulatory harmonization (AMRH) program which aims to assure quality, efficacy and safety of medicines by collaborating with regional economic communities (RECs) and national medicines regulatory authorities to create a simplified and transparent regulatory system.

The expected result of the conference will be to establish IGAD regional regulatory unit for medicine regulation and harmonization for the provision of affordable and high quality medicine to benefit the people in the region, noted the statement.

IGAD region needs proper regulations of medical and health care products as well as effective health care delivery systems that are responsive to current and emerging health challenges, said the statement,

The conference is financially supported by the World Bank Group and technically supported by the World Health Organization (WHO). Endit
