Gambia's High Court refuses bail for opposition leader

Gambia's High Court refused a bail application for opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Ousainou Darboe and other party members at a hearing on Monday.

Darboe said at the hearing that UDP member Solo Sandeng and other members should be released immediately whether they are "dead or alive," or else he preferred to stay in prison.

Sandeng and two fellow party members were reported to have died in detention after leading a protest calling for electoral reform and the resignation of Gambian President Yahya Jammeh.

Darboe himself was arrested with others after a second round of demonstrations on April 16 demanding investigation into the circumstances that led to those deaths.

Thousands of his party supporters and sympathizers stormed the court house on Monday to show solidarity, while many were stopped by Gambian paramilitary officers who barricaded the main entrance to Banjul. Endi
