Tanzania to host 2016 Africa's Water Week

Xinhua, April 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Tanzania is set to host the 6th Africa Water Week which will attract more than 1,000 policy makers and experts in water resource from across the continent and the world.

According to a statement issued on Monday by permanent secretary in the Tanzania's ministry of Water and Irrigation, Eng. Mbogo Futakamba, the regional event will take place between July 18 and 22, in the country's commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.

Futakamba described Africa's Water Week as the first since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, which forms the theme: "Achieving the SDGs on Water Security and Sanitation."

This will be Africa's flagship water event representing a political commitment at the highest level for creating a platform to discuss and collectively seek solutions to Africa's water and sanitation challenges.

The event has been organized by the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW) in collaboration with the African Union Commission.

"I am delighted that Africa Water Week has grown into a huge global brand and movement which lobbies to influence global, regional and national action and programmers to achieve water security and improved sanitation services," Futakamba said.

AMCOW executive secretary Bai Mass Taal lauded Tanzania for being the host of the continental event. He said the event is a bold initiative to promote the organization's belief that effective and efficient management of water resources leads to the provision of adequate and equitable safe water and sanitation, as well as makes a critical contribution to Africa's progress towards sustainable growth and development.

He added that it also represents the quest in the continent to place emphasis on matching commitment and plans with concrete action.

Taal said the 6th Africa Water Week would be to develop a roadmap for developing a comprehensive plan of action for Africa, aimed at immediate translation of the high level commitment on water security and sanitation in the continent.

The fifth Africa Water Week was held in Dakar, Senegal in 2014. Enditem
