1st LD: 150 dead as heat wave sweeps India--official

At least 150 people have died so far in an intense heat wave that have been sweeping large parts of India since the beginning of April, an official said Saturday.

"The worst-hit have been the eastern state of Odisha, which accounts for half of the deaths, and the southern states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh," he said on condition of anonymity.

"The deaths are mainly due to heat stroke and dehydration," he said.

Several parts of the western state of Maharashtra, the central states of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, and the eastern states of Jharkhand and West Bengal have also been bearing the brunt.

Indian weather department has predicted that severe heat wave conditions are likely to prevail in some of these states for the next four to five days. Enditem
