Belarus sees opportunities to boost cooperation with Africa

Belarus hopes to establish strong communication channels with its African partners, Belarusian Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov said here on Friday.

Belarus' relations with African states rely on the traditions of friendship, equality and mutual respect, the prime minister said at a meeting with Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

Belarus highly appreciates the increasing role and influence of the AU Commission not only in Africa but also throughout the world, Kobyakov added.

According to the prime minister, joint implementation of large-scale projects is a good opportunity to strengthen cooperation. As positive examples, he cited the successful work of joint ventures to assemble tractors and cars in Egypt and Algeria, adding that Belarusian dump trucks, metal, potash products are in great demand in the African market.

Kobyakov stressed that Belarus is interested in supplying comfortable passenger buses, municipal vehicles, and road-building machinery to Africa.

Another area of cooperation is education. Kobyakov said Belarus is ready to provide training and arrange internships in such majors as agriculture, engineering, medicine and military science.

In turn, the chairman of the AU Commission said Belarus could become reliable partner to African countries. The potential for cooperation with Belarus is very high, she said.

It is reported that the trade turnover of Belarus with African countries currently stands at about 900 million U.S. dollars per year. Endi
