DR Congo president signs Paris climate deal

Xinhua, April 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) Joseph Kabila signed Friday in New York the Paris agreement on climate.

In his speech to the UN tribune broadcast live on Congolese state television (RTNC), Kabila said that "the Paris agreement is an opportunity and it is crucial to respect."

Kabila is among heads of state and government who are present at UN headquarters for the signature of the COP21 agreement adopted last December in Paris, France.

The agreement commits its signatories to limit the temperature rise well below 2 degrees Celsius and to continue their efforts to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The agreement can enter into force 30 days after at least 55 parties that account for at least 55 percent of global emissions take further national steps to ratify it. Endit
