Chad President Deby Itno re-elected with 61.56 pct

Xinhua, April 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno has been re-elected in the first round of the April 10 presidential elections with 61.56 percent of the votes cast, provisional results released Thursday night by the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) have showed.

His main opposition challenger Saleh Kebzabo got 12.80 percent of the votes cast, while Laoukein Kourayo Medard, the mayor of the country's economic capital, Moundou, came third with 10.69 percent.

Former Prime Minister Joseph Djimrangar Dadnadji who joined the opposition, came fourth with five percent.

On April 10, 76.11 percent of the 6.2 million Chadians registered on the biometric register, turned up to vote for their preferred presidential candidate.

Prior to the announcement of the provisional results, eight opposition candidates, among them opposition leader Kebzabo and ex-Prime Minister Djimrangar Dadnadji, had threatened to form "a national salvation government" if CENI declares the incumbent president as the winner.

They warned both CENI and the Constitutional Council against any attempt to validate rigged elections, and added that they will not recognize any institution that will be formed "by a leader who was elected fraudulently."

They noted that "they reserve the right to form a national salvation government to respond to the wishes of the sovereign Chadian people." Endit
