10 officials charged over fraud in Niger's civil service recruitment

About ten people accused of fraudulently interfering with the organization of Niger's civil service entry examinations have been charged, judicial sources in the capital Niamey said Wednesday.
Niger's public service had organized an examination for direct recruitment of workers in the health ministry. The examination led to recruitment of 1,831 new civil servants, but their admission was later cancelled due to allegations of corruption.
Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou gave firm instructions for investigations to be launched to identify those involved so that they could be charged in court.
Addressing the press in Niamey, Public Prosecutor Samna Chaibou said investigations which had been launched revealed various kinds of cheating on the 28,000 copies of examination papers for the 14,000 candidates who took the test.
"It is clear that people who did not sit for examinations were admitted with higher marks while those who sat the examinations and scored highly had their marks reduced to deny them a chance to be admitted," Chaibou said.
The incident occurred a few days after the April 2 swearing in of Issoufou for his second five-year term. During the ceremony, the president renewed his commitment to fight against corruption. Endit
