6 children killed in Ukraine house fire

Xinhua, April 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Six children were killed early Thursday in a house fire in Ukraine's southern Odessa region, local authorities said.

The blaze broke out in a private house in Shabo village at about 3:30 a.m. (0130 GMT), when the family of a mother and her six kids were sleeping in, Volodymyr Zhmak, the first vice-governor of Odessa region, said in a statement.

The mother ran out for help, leaving the children, aged between 4 months and 10 years old, in the house, Zhmak said.

The State Service for Emergencies said firefighters received an emergency call only at 4:30 a.m. (0230 GMT) and arrived at the site in five minutes, but it was too late. The roof of the house had collapsed.

All the six children were found dead inside the house after the blaze was extinguished at 6:05 a.m. (0405 GMT)

Investigation into the cause of the fire is under way. Endi
