Malaria remains number one cause for hospitalization, deaths in DR Congo

Xinhua, April 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is one of the countries that still pays a heavy price due to malaria, with the disease remaining a number one cause for hospitalization and deaths, a source from the World Health Organization (WHO) office in the country said Wednesday in Kinshasa.

"At least three families loose a loved one every hour somewhere in DR Congo due to malaria," said Dr. Bakary Sambou, the head of malaria division in the local WHO office.

Despite these grim statistics, Bakary noted that malaria-related deaths had reduced in DR Congo from 92 percent in 2010 to 44 percent in 2014.

The WHO official promised his organization's support for DR Congo government to improve the population's health situation through reduction of the burden of malaria. Endit
