Background: Costumes of ritual Lighting Ceremony for 2016 Rio Olympics

Xinhua, April 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

The costumes of the actresses and dancers participating in the ritual Lighting Ceremony of the 2016 Rio Olympics at the birthplace of the Games were designed by the Greek Cypriot fashion designer Eleni Kyriacou.

Born in Britain, she was an apprentice for the late Alexander Mcqueen and her studio is currently located in Athens.

Kyriacou introduced the colors of the Greek landscape in the internal pleats of the dresses of the priestesses -- light turquoise and light blue in combination with the olive green, referencing the Greek seas and olive tree.

A total of 150 kilos of Merino wool was used to make 85 costumes. Each one weighs between 1.2 to 1.8 kilos.

The volunteer artists' wearing were designed by Christina Martini and Nikolas Minoglou. They were inspired by the mythology and ancient Greek pottery and sculpture. Endit
