Ghana faces fresh outbreak of bird flu

Xinhua, April 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Ghana's deputy minister of Food and Agriculture Hannah Louisa Bissiw on Wednesday confirmed the outbreak of bird flu in the Western Region of the country.

The outbreak has hit an area near Takoradi city, some 225 km east of the capital, where authorities of the Veterinary Services Department have disinfected a poultry farm after 250 birds were destroyed over a fresh outbreak of avian flu.

The culling was to ward off further spread of the disease.

Bissiw said the smuggling of birds from neighboring countries into Ghana had played a key role in the latest development.

"There has been a new outbreak but it is not like it has resurrected," she told Citi fm in Accra.

Ghana culled over 50,000 birds on farms in three regions as a result of Avian Influenza outbreak last year, leading to the temporary ban on the sale and movement of live birds within the capital to prevent further outbreaks.

The bird flu virus can affect individuals in close contact with infected or dead birds. Enditem
