1st LD: Bounnhang Vorachit elected Lao president

General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Bounnhang Vorachit was elected as President of Laos on Wednesday morning, the first day of the First Session of the eighth Lao National Assembly (NA).

Bounnhang Vorachit was elected as General Secretary of LPRP at the close of the 10th National Party Congress on January 22 this year replacing retiring General Secretary Choummaly Sayasone.

Meanwhile, Politburo member of the Central Committee of the LPRP Thongloun Sisoulith was appointed as prime minister.

This session of the 149-member assembly, which was convened Wednesday in the Lao capital of Vientiane also reelected Pany Yathotou as president of National Assembly.

The first session of the eighth Lao NA, which will conclude on Friday, is to vote the country's leadership for the next five-year tenure and discuss issues relating to the assembly's apparatus.

The three-day session will consider and approve the draft development vision until 2030, the draft development strategy until 2025, and the draft 8th five--year National Socio-economic Development Plan (2016--2020). Enditem
