UN chief mourns death of former Chilean President Aylwin

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday mourned the death of former Chilean President Patricio Aylwin, describing him as a great Latin American statesmen.

Aylwin, the first elected president at the end of a 17-year military rule in Chile in 1990, died Tuesday at the age of 97.

"Moved by deep humanist convictions, Mr. Aylwin made a great contribution to his country as a respected politician, opinion leader, lawyer, author and intellectual throughout the 97 years of his life," said a statement issued here by Ban's spokesman.

"His struggle for democracy, social justice and human rights will remain an inspiration for the region and the world." Endi
