Moroccan detained in Mallorca on terror charges

Xinhua, April 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Spanish security forces on Tuesday arrested a Moroccan national in the city of Palma de Mallorca on charges of recruiting for DAESH, or the Islamic State.

The Spanish Interior Ministry confirmed the arrest, adding that the 26-year old had used social network sites and focused his attention on trying to persuade young people to join the militant group.

The ministry added that after establishing contact with possible recruits he "aided their journey to the conflict zone for their integration into DAESH."

It added that he also "maintained close contact with known terrorists currently based in Syria who either aided the arrival of new fighters in the conflict zone or sent instructions or material to carry out a terrorist act in our country (Spain), or another European country."

Documents discovered in the man's apartment indicated he was studying specific targets in Spain and Europe for such an attack.

This arrest came after the detention of two more suspended DAESH members in the port city of Algeciras on Saturday as they attempted to travel across the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco. Endit
