Xinhua, April 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday sent his deepest condolences to the people and government of Japan which was struck by powerful earthquakes last week.

Ban said his thoughts are with the people of Japan in the aftermath of the two major earthquakes, said UN Secretary-General's spokesman in a statement to the press.

While commending Japanese government, emergency responders and other civil society organizations who are sparing no efforts to help people in need and to restore essential services, Ban said the United Nations stands ready to provide assistance should it be requested, the spokesman said.

At least 42 people were killed and more than 1,000 others injured after waves of strong quakes, including one measuring 6.5 magnitude on the Richter scale and another 7.3 magnitude, rocked Kumamoto from late Thursday to early Saturday, followed by more than 500 aftershocks. Endit
