China's ongoing release of water shows good cooperation between China-Mekong countries: Cambodia

Cambodia said on Sunday that China's ongoing discharge of water from a hydropower station into the drought-hit downstream Mekong River clearly reflected good cooperation between China and the Mekong countries.

"Cambodia welcomes the recent decision of the Government of the People's Republic of China to continue to discharge water from Jinghong Hydropower Station in Yunnan Province to downstream Mekong River from April 11, 2016 to help alleviate the impacts of drought sustained by countries at downstream areas of the Mekong River, including Cambodia," a Foreign Ministry statement said.

"The discharge of water into Mekong River proves again the good cooperation on water resource management between the Mekong countries and China," the statement said.

It was the third time that China has released water for emergency use by the Mekong countries since early this year. Mekong River originates in China and runs through Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. It is known as Lancang River in the Chinese stretch.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said on Monday that his country faced a severe drought and appealed to China to continue supplying water to downstream reaches of the Mekong.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said on Tuesday that China decided to continue discharging water starting April 11 and last until the end of low water period. Enditem
