Burkina Faso lifts account freeze on suspected coup plotters

Burkina Faso's judicial authorities earlier this month ordered the lifting of account freeze of tens of people and political parties suspected of involvement in a failed coup last September, an official source said Thursday.

The accounts of these individuals and political parties were frozen six months ago on the orders of Burkina Faso's public prosecutor.

Among those targeted are coup leaders including General Gilbert Diendere and 13 other individuals close to ex-President Blaise Compaore, among them ex-Foreign Minister Djibril Bassole, head of former ruling party Eddie Komboigo and his deputy Leonce Kone.

Others who were targeted were political parties allied to the former ruling party, Congress for Democracy and Progress.

On Sept. 16, 2015, soldiers from Presidential Security Regiment briefly overthrew the transition government, before being defeated.

The transition government was formed after Compaore was ousted amid protests in October 2014. Its mandate ended following general elections held in November 2015. Endit
