1st LD: Highway police chief killed in northern Afghan province

The highway police chief of the northern Takhar province along with two of his bodyguards were killed as unknown armed men opened fire on his vehicle on Thursday, police said.

"The police chief for highways linking Takhar to the neighboring Kunduz province, Abdul Qahar Kharmabi was attacked and killed by unknown armed men on a road in Farkhar district of Takhar province today," provincial police spokesman Abdul Khalil Asir told Xinhua.

Two of his bodyguards were also killed in the attack, the official added.

Meantime, locals said that Kharmabi along with three of his bodyguards were killed and another bodyguards sustained injuries.

No group or individual has claimed of responsibility for the deadly ambuscade.

Taliban militants who are active in parts of Takhar and the neighboring Kunduz provinces haven't commented. Enditem
