Cholera kills 16 people in Zambian capital

Xinhua, April 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least 16 people have died since the outbreak of cholera in Lusaka, the Zambian capital, in February, an official said on Wednesday.

Lusaka Province Medical Officer Kennedy Malama said in an update that 11 people were brought dead from their homes while five died at treatment centers that have been established in the city.

The official further said the number of cases has now reached 734 in the capital.

The Ministry of Health has since started carrying out vaccinations in areas where the waterborne disease has broken out in the city, he added.

The ministry, he said, has continued emphasizing the importance of cholera prevention by sensitizing people to keep their surroundings clean.

Cholera broke out in early February in the Zambian capital but has since spread to other areas in central, northern and Copperbelt Province. Endit
