Interview: "We will paint China for better mutual understanding"

Art is an important way to promote mutual understanding between the peoples of Brunei and China and "We are going to see China, paint China in this visit and show Brunei people the real China through our works", a Brunei artist has said.

Dato Shofry Abdul Ghafor, head of a Brunei delegation of artists made the remarks on Tuesday before departing for a 10-day trip to China.

With the support of the Chinese Embassy to Brunei, five artists from Brunei artists will attend the China-Brunei Artists Workshop and have exchanges with their counterparts from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. They will also pay visit to several other cities and places including Shanghai and Huangshan Mountain in Anhui province.

"Firstly, I want to thank the Chinese Embassy for supporting our trip to China. Secondly, I believe art exchange is a very important way to strengthen the relationship between the two countries especially between the peoples with different cultures," Dato Shofry Abdul Ghafor said in an interview with Xinhua at the Brunei international airport.

During their visit, the Bruneian delegation of artists is also expected to visit Chinese ink factories as well as the College of Brush Painting and Calligraphy in a bid to further understand traditional Chinese culture and arts.

"Art is an important vehicle for an better understanding between the two societies," Dato Shofry Abdul Ghafor said, adding "We five artists are going to feel China and paint China in our visit, and hopefully, we will have a joint exhibition with Chinese artists this year."

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of China-Brunei diplomatic relations. As part of the celebration, the Chinese Embassy to Brunei plans to hold a joint exhibition of paintings by the above-mentioned artists and their Chinese counterparts in Bandar Seri Begawan later this year to promote exchanges between the two countries' art communities.

Last November, three artists from the China Academy of Art visited Brunei and held a China-Brunei Artists Workshop at the Rain Forest Gallery. Endit
