A man was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a court in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region for illegally transporting wild animal products, including ivory products and rhino horns, the Intermediate People's Court of Fangchenggang City has announced.
The man, surnamed Zhang, is a native of neighboring Guangdong Province. He was sentenced to 10-year imprisonment and fined 50,000 yuan(7,740 U.S. dollars) by the court on March 29.
Zhang attempted to transport 2.2 kilogram of ivory products, 0.69 kilogram of rhino horn fragments, as well as 0.19 kilogram of lions' teeth, on March 16, 2015 from Dongxing City in Guangxi to Fangchenggang. He then intended to smuggle the wild animal products to neighboring countries, according to the court.
All the products are worth more than 260,000 yuan and were from rare or protected animals, it said.
Zhang was initially given the verdict by the people's court of Dongxing city, which said Zhang had committed the crime of illegally transporting wild animal products.
The Intermediate People's Court of Fangchenggang City upheld the verdict after Zhang appealed. Endi
