The race for the Spanish BBVA Primera Liga title was thrown wide open after FC Barcelona saw their lead at the top of the table reduced to just three points over second place Atletico Madrid and four over Real Madrid as they were beaten 1-0 away to Real Sociedad on Matchday 32 of the season.
Barca had not won in Real Sociedad' s Anoeta Stadium in the league since 2006 and Mikel Oiarzabal' s excellent headed goal in the opening minutes of the game made sure that history repeated itself yet again.
Barca worked hard to get back on level terms, but once again Luis Enrique' s side, which was without the suspended Luis Suarez, looked flat and the home side were able to defend their lead with a confidence which must have worried Barca fans.
Barca have now taken just one point from a possible nine and a once unassailable looking lead now looks much less convincing.
Atletico Madrid took full advantage of Barca' s slip up with a confident and professional win away to Espanyol.
Diego Simeone' s men also fell behind in the score as Pape Diop netted his third goal in three games, but that lead only lasted seven minutes before Fernando Torres continued his recent good form with the equalizing goal.
Antoine Griezmann put Atletico ahead with a left foot shot two minutes before the hour and Koke sealed the win with a goal in the last minute of normal time.
Real Madrid also moved into contention for the title with an easy 4-0 win at home to Eibar in a game which was as good as over by halftime as Madrid took advantage of some generous defending to go 3-0 by the 20th minute.
James Rodriguez opened the scoring with a free kick, before Lucas Vazquez and Cristiano Ronaldo made the result safe, well before Jese Rodriguez made it 4-0 before halftime and against a side which never believed in its possibilities, it made no difference that Madrid rested key players ahead of Tuesday' s vital Champions League tie at home to Wolfsburg.
Sunday started with Nolito' s second half goal helping strengthen fifth place Celta Vigo' s argument for a place in Europe next season while at the same time making it harder for Sporting Gijon to avoid relegation.
A last minute goal from Alvaro Negredo gave Valencia three vital points against Sevilla, who have still not won away in the Spanish league this season.
Dani Parejo opened the scoring for Valencia with a free kick, but when Kevin Gameiro equalized four minutes from time it looked as if Valencia were to be condemned to another week' s suffering until Negredo appeared to give coach Paco Ayesteran his first win since replacing Gary Neville.
Meanwhile goals in either half from Denis Suarez and Cedric Bakambu all but assured Villarreal will finish fourth this season as they beat a hapless Getafe 2-0. Getafe remain struck in the relegation zone with just 2 points from their last 12 games.
Ruben Castro' s late goal assured Betis' top flight future, but all but condemned bottom of the table Levante to relegation in a tight game in Sevilla, before Sunday ended with Athletic Club Bilbao riding their luck for an Inaki Williams goal to give them a 1-0 win at home to Rayo Vallecano.
Williams injured himself in scoring, but his goal keeps Athletic in sixth place in the table. Endit
