5 killed, 50 injured after bus rolls down into gorge in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Xinhua, April 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least five people were killed and over 50 others injured on Sunday after a bus they were travelling in skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

The accident took place at village Dhara of mountainous Doda district, about 242 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"In a tragic road accident today (Sunday) five people were killed and over 50 others injured when a bus carrying them rolled down into a 200-feet deep gorge," a senior police official told Xinhua over telephone.

"The injured passengers were immediately rushed to district hospital Doda."

Soon after the accident, police officials and locals rushed to the spot to rescue the injured and retrieve bodies from the mangled bus.

Locals said the ill-fated bus was carrying around 60 people, mostly locals, to Doda town.

Officials fear the casualties are likely to increase owing to critical condition of some injured in the accident.

The cause of accident was being ascertained, police officials said. However, preliminary investigations carried out by police suggested the driver lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a sharp curve.

The region's Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed grief over the death of the five people and prayed for speedy recovery of those injured in the accident, a local government spokesman said.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving. Endit
