Ghana's energy supply shortfall to persist till late April

Limited power supply in Ghana is expected to last till the end of April as the country has to grapple with low gas supply from its sources, a statement said here on Friday.
The Energy Sector Load Management Committee said the country had lost 1,000 Mega Watts (MW) in generation as a result of lack of natural gas supply from the Jubilee field following the shutdown of production vessel FPSO Kwame Nkrumah on March 20 for a two-week scheduled maintenance.
William Amuna, chairman of the committee, said in the statement that the FPSO was not likely to resume production till the end of April.
"At the same time, gas supply from Nigeria has remained around 10 percent of the contracted volume of 120 million Standard Cubic Feet of gas per day for more than a month now," the statement said.
The statement added that the attempt to convert some of the country's dual-fired thermal plants to be able to use crude oil was also met with a hitch, compounding the problem.
The statement however assured that engineers were working round the clock to ensure that the interruptions in power supply remained minimal.
The last energy supply shortfall came after the West African country went through a crippling power crisis that lasted for more than three years before it became somewhat stabilized in December. Enditem
