At least four soldiers and one officer were killed and 11 others injured in two separate explosions on Thursday night in Egypt's restive Sinai Peninsula, official security sources said.
Two armored personnel carriers were hit by explosions in North Sinai: one in Kharouba village south Sheikh Zuwaid city, and the other happened 500 meters away from Rafah police station, the sources told Xinhua.
All the explosives devices were remotely detonated, the sources added.
The Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for the attacks on its twitter official page, but the statement said 18 soldiers were killed in series of attacks near Sheikh Zuwaid and Rafah cities.
Egypt is facing an escalating wave of anti-security attacks since the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi in 2013 following mass protests against his rule.
Sinai State, which pledged loyalty to the IS, has claimed responsibility for the most attacks, that have been centered basically in Sinai Peninsula. Endit
