Vietnamese parliament on Thursday elected Nguyen Xuan Phuc the country's new Prime Minister.
With 446 "yes" votes out of 490 valid ballots cast by the National Assembly (NA) deputies, Phuc was approved to be the new cabinet chief at the 11th session of the 13th NA.
Phuc, 61, was chosen to replace Nguyen Tan Dung, who was relieved from the duty of Vietnamese prime minister on Wednesday.
"I swear to be absolutely loyal to the nation, the people and the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam," Phuc said in his sworn statement.
He also pledged to make every effort to fulfill the duty assigned by the Vietnamese party, the state and the people.
On behalf of the NA, Vietnamese NA chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan said before offering a flower bouquet to Phuc, "Wish you to fulfill the task and correctly realize what you swear today."
Later, in his speech delivered at the NA, Phuc said, "Once again I would like to send special thanks to the NA for electing me as Prime Minister. This is a great honor and heavy responsibility that the state and the people have assigned me."
"I will try my best to serve the nation and serve the people, all for the goal of building a socialist country of Vietnam with rich people, strong nation, democracy, equality and civilization," Phuc said.
The newly-elected prime minister said, "As head of the state's highest administrative agency, which carries out executive power, I, along with cabinet members, will make efforts to build a strong and united government with consensus, efficiency, effectiveness, and drastic action. We will wholeheartedly serve the people and well fulfill mandates as regulated by the Constitution and Laws."
Phuc also sent his gratitude to his predecessor Nguyen Tan Dung and other previous cabinet chiefs for their great contributions to the cause of the nation.
Phuc later offered a flower bouquet to Dung, wishing him good health to continue his contributions to the country.
Phuc was born on July 20, 1954 in central Quang Nam province. Phuc holds a bachelor degree in economics. He was a member of the tenth (2006) and 11th Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee (CPVCC) and now is a member of the 12th CPVCC. Endit
