Chinatown, one of Singapore's most iconic scenic spots known for its traditional Chinese culture, will undergo renovation since the end of the year, local media reported on Wednesday.
The renovation will include about 160 stalls at Chinatown Street Market, which was designed in 2004 to give visitors authentic hawking scene of the old Singapore. Visitors can buy souvenirs, gifts and local art and crafts products along the streets in this region.
The refurbishments aim to improve safety and also give a cleaner view of the region, reported Channel NewsAsia (CNA), who added that fire safety features like sprinklers will be added, along with insulated roofs.
The stalls will be closed in phases. "So at any one time, between 13 and 20 stalls will be affected. Twenty stalls is a small percentage of the overall street market experience," executive director of the Chinatown Business Association (CBA) Lim Yick Suan told CNA.
The first phase will kick start in the last quarter of 2016, with the last phase scheduled to be completed by the first half of 2018. Enditem
