Singapore outlines key approaches to fighting terrorism

Xinhua, April 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Singapore's Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam on Wednesday outlined key approaches on counter-terrorism which the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will enhance.

Speaking at a parliament committee, Shanmugam said MHA will improve protective security measures for buildings and premises, including expanding video camera network; enhance security response capabilities in event of an armed attack; and strengthen community response through a new national movement.

Shanmugam said the country's Home Team will transform to adopt a data-driven, tiered and differentiated frontline approach, which entails employing data analytics to anticipate where safety and security emergencies might take place, and deploy resources to focus on these hotspots.

The minister noted that Singapore's Home Team will use all intelligence and investigation tools available. "We will have to make better use of available data, for example public transport video cameras and Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) systems, these contain important data that can be vital to our safety and security," he said.

Besides technology, Shanmugam also stressed the need to attract people to join Home Team. Singapore Police Force (SPF) will implement a unified rank structure to provide seamless advancement opportunities. Police will also introduce expert tracks to build deep specialty in the key domains of investigations, intelligence and special operations. Endit
