Russia to create National Guard to fight terrorism, organized crime

Xinhua, April 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Tuesday that Russia will create a National Guard to fight terrorism, organized crime and drug trafficking.

The force will be set up on the basis of interior troops and be in close contact with the Interior Ministry, Putin said during a meeting on reforms of the country's law enforcement agencies.

He said the new body will be used as paramilitary and riot police.

Russia has been making great efforts to ensure security on its territory and in neighboring areas in the face of growing threats of terrorism and extremism. The Islamic State has threatened to conduct attacks on Russia after Moscow launched air campaigns against terrorist targets in Syria in late 2015. Endi
