Senegal grants asylum to two ex-detainees at Guantanamo

Xinhua, April 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

Senegalese government on Monday granted asylum, on humanitarian grounds, to two Libyan nationals who had been detained without charges for 14 years in the U.S. prison in Guantanamo.

A statement released by Senegal's foreign ministry said "no charges were brought" against the two Libyans, one of whom was handicapped.

The asylum, the statement added, was granted in conformity with the relevant conventions of international humanitarian law, also in the tradition of Senegalese hospitality and Islamic solidarity with the two Africans who have expressed interest in resettlement in Senegal after their release. Enditem
