India launches high speed train

Xinhua, April 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

India Tuesday launched its first high speed train, which will run between New Delhi and the tourist town of Agra, famed for its iconic Taj Mahal.

Indian Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu flagged off Gatimaan Express at Hazrat Nizamuddin station in the national capital this morning.

The new express train can attain a maximum speed of 160 km per hour and will operate six days a week, except Friday when the Taj Mahal is closed to visitors.

A trip to Agra, which is nearly 300 km from Delhi, will take less than one and a half hours and cost a little over 10 U.S. dollars, and passengers will get on board entertainment during the journey.

"The launch of this train heralds a new era of high-speed rail travel in India," the Indian Railways said in a statement.

"The coaches have been fitted with bio-toilets. These coaches have also been fitted with balanced draft gear couplers for a smooth ride," the statement said. Enditem
