Immigration, competition driving record New Zealand new car sales

Xinhua, April 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

New car sales in New Zealand rose by 3 percent year on year last month to 12,110 vehicles, making it the strongest March month since 1984, the Motor Industry Association (MIA) said Tuesday.

"Strong net immigration, competitive pricing and end of financial year deals drove strong new vehicles registrations in March 2016," MIA chief executive officer David Crawford said in a statement.

Commercial vehicle sales in March were up 6.5 to 3,919, while passenger vehicle sales were up 1.4 percent year on year to 8,191.

"The month of March continued the overall strong performance of the new vehicle sector over the last three years. With the first quarter of 2016 done and dusted, the new vehicle market is 3 percent (1,017 units) ahead of the first quarter outturn for 2015," said Crawford.

Toyota was the overall market leader in March with 15 percent market share, followed by Ford with 10 percent and Mitsubishi with 8 percent. Endit
