Latvia's ruling party remains most popular for second month in row: poll

The ruling centrist Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS) emerged as Latvia's most popular political party for the second month running in March, beating the long-standing ratings leader Harmony again, the latest public opinion poll shows.
According to the survey conducted from March 5 to 17 by Latvijas Fakti pollster, ZZS saw its popularity rating drop from 21.2 percent in February to 20.2 in March, yet the current leader of Latvia' s center-right government coalition stayed ahead of the opposition leftist party Harmony, whose rating took a tumble, from 20.1 percent in February to 17.9 percent in March.
If parliamentary elections had been held in Latvia in March, nine percent of voters would have cast their ballots for the ruling rightist National Alliance, which saw its voter support rise in March from 8.7 percent in February.
The popularity of the ruling center-right Unity party kept dropping, from 5.9 percent in February to 5.5 percent in March, coming dangerously close to the five percent vote threshold, which has to be surpassed to win seats in the Latvian parliament.
None of the two other opposition parties represented in the parliament -- the Bloc of Regions and For Latvia from the Heart -- would have surpassed the five percent mark in March, the poll suggested. Endit
