The following are the highlights of leading Zambian media outlets on Monday.

-- The United States government said it will not interfere in Zambia's politics ahead of this year's general elections but will support a credible electoral process.

US Ambassador to Zambia Eric Schultz said his government was not supporting any candidate ahead of the August 11 elections but was interested to see an election process that was credible.

Zambia will hold elections on August 11 in which incumbent President Edgar Lungu of the ruling Patriotic Front is seeking re-election. (TIMES OF ZAMBIA).

-- Manufacturers in Zambia have said a reduction in the country's annual inflation rate by 0.7 percentage points in March was too minimal for economic restoration.

The annual inflation rate decreased from 22.9 percent in February to 22.2 percent in March, according to the Central Statistical Office (CSO).

But Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM) president Roseta Mwape said the inflation rate as high as 22.2 percent still does not favor positive business operations. (THE POST).

-- The Government has advised authorities in Zambia not to relent in their efforts of diversifying the economy even in the wake of rising copper prices.

Finish Ambassador to Zambia Timo Olkkonen said recent rises in copper prices on the international market did not mean that Zambia should slow down in her efforts to diversify the economy especially the development of agriculture.

Copper-dependent Zambia is promoting the diversification of its economy due to falling copper prices. (THE DAILY NATION).

-- Millers in Zambia have welcomed government's decision to restrict the transportation of maize and maize meal to daytime as a measure aimed at curbing smuggling of the commodities to neighboring countries.

Millers Association of Zambia president Allan Sakala said there was no need to transport the two commodities at night as traders could do so during the daytime.

Government has restricted the transportation of maize and maize meal from 6 a.m to 6 pm in order to curb smuggling which has become rampant following a huge market in some neighboring countries. (ZAMBIA DAILY MAIL) Endit
