UN Security Council to meet on Burundi

The UN Security Council is expected to vote on draft resolution late Friday which would pave the way for an enhanced UN police presence, UN officials and diplomats said here.
The 15-nation UN body is scheduled to meet on the situation in Burundi at 7:00 p.m. EDT (00:00 GMT) on Friday, the UN Spokesperson's Office told reporters here.
The draft resolution, tabled by France, requested that UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hold talks with the Burundian government and the African Union on the proposed international presence and present options to the Security Council within 15 days, diplomats said.
The draft resolution initially circulated by France on March 29 came after an attempt in late February to adopt a presidential statement on Burundi which was unsuccessful due to a lack of consensus, the diplomats said.
The United Nations will do everything possible to facilitate peaceful resolution of the Burundi crisis, the secretary-general said at the end of his official visit to Burundi in late February.
The Burundian political crisis began in April 2015 after incumbent President Pierre Nkurunziza announced plans to contest for a third term, a move that was contested by both opposition and civil society groups. Enditem
