Kenya's overall monthly inflation declined marginally to 6.45 percent in March from 6.84 percent in February, the statistics bureau said on Thursday.
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics said the Consumer Price Index (CPI), computed using the geometric mean approach, increased from 164.67 in February to 165.92 in March.
"Between February and March, Food and Non-Alcoholic Drinks' Index rose by 1.39 percent. This resulted from notable increases in prices of key food items which outweighed the decreases," the bureau said in a statement issued in Nairobi.
The bureau said Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco and Narcotics index continued to remain higher than in the same month of 2015, mainly due to higher Excise duty levied on beer cigarettes and other products as from December 2015.
Over the same review period, Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels' index increased by 0.58 percent.
"This aggregate increase was mainly attributed to rise in the cost of house rents, water services and kerosene. The cost of electricity however, remained at the same level as in the previous month," the statement said.
The Transport Index decreased by 0.34 percent in March compared to the previous month, mainly due to reduced cost of petrol and diesel, according to the bureau. Enditem
