Uruguay lays out plans to co-host 2030 World Cup with Argentina

Uruguay has formally expressed its interest in co-hosting the 2030 World Cup with Argentina, the country's president, Tabare Vazquez, said on Wednesday.

Vazquez met with FIFA president Gianni Infantino in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo as the latter continues his first South American tour as head of world football's governing body.

"We've officially asked the FIFA president about the possibility of the 2030 World Cup being held in Uruguay to commemorate 100 years since the first World Cup was played here at the Centenario where Argentina and Uruguay were the finalists," Vazquez told a news conference.

The proposal has the backing of Argentina's President Mauricio Macri, Vazquez said.

Infantino, who was elected FIFA president last month, replacing Sepp Blatter, acknowledged the idea of a World Cup in Uruguay and Argentina had been discussed.

"We've talked about this dream, this idea, this plan, this project, but 2030 is still quite far away," Infantino said.

"At FIFA we still need to do the entire process for 2026 and then we will talk about 2030. "It is very positive that there is this interest in two countries that wrote the history of football." Endit
