EU to provide milk to 350,000 Syrian children

The European Commission on Wednesday adopted a 30-million-euro (34.06 million U.S. dollar) program to provide 350,000 Syrian children with drinking milk, as part of aid provided by the European Union (EU) for those who have been affected by the crisis in Syria.

"We must remain committed to helping the most vulnerable victims of the conflict. This additional support will go to humanitarian partner organizations working in the country," said EU commissioner for humanitarian aid and crisis management, Christos Stylianides.

The EU said in a statement the milk provided would come from the EU and is part of the European Commission's 500-million-euro solidarity package to European farmers presented in 2015.

"It will support European farmers through the purchase of drinking milk while at the same time contributing to address one of the biggest challenges the EU is facing," the statement added.

This one-off scheme will be financed from the EU budget. The measure is additional to other humanitarian funding for people affected by the Syrian conflict. Endit
