Four teens die of drug overdose in S. Africa

Xinhua, March 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Four teenagers in South Africa have died as a result of drug overdose, police confirmed on Sunday.

Police said an investigation has been launched to probe the deaths of the four kids, who died after taking up drugs over the weekend in KwaMashu in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Province.

Thirty-six others were also critically affected after ingesting the so-called "Mercedes" concoction, police said.

The deaths have prompted the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) to reiterate its call for Police Minister Nathi Nhleko to hasten the roll-out of Narcotics Enforcement Bureau units in priority clusters to crack down on illicit drug trafficking.

The tragic turn of latest events should spur the police minister and top brass to hasten the implementation of the specialised anti-drug units in order to minimise more innocent deaths in future, the party added. Enditem
