Cuban player Guerrero into last four at Giraldilla Badminton Tournament

Xinhua, March 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Cuban player Osleni Guerrero defeated Bjorn Seguin from the United States to reach the semifinals of the 17th Giraldilla International Badminton Tournament being held in Havana on Friday.

Guerrero, defending champion and world number 58, eased past Seguin, the 2014 champion, 21-17, 21-17.

The traditional contest, attended by around 40 athletes from 13 countries and regions, also features women's singles as well as doubles and mixed doubles.

The tournament, which runs till March 27, is part of the qualifying process for the upcoming Rio Olympic Games. The winners of Giraldilla's men's singles, women's singles and mixed doubles will be awarded 2,500 points towards the Olympics in August.

The winners of the men's and women's doubles will not be awarded points as less than eight pairs are registered in the tournament. Eight pairs are an essential requirement for an Olympics qualifying tournament to grant points. Endi
