OSCE trains Albanian police to prepare for refugee influx

Xinhua, March 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Thursday began to train Albanian border police on irregular migration to prepare them for the influx of refugees from the Middle East.

Workshops were launched in Korca in south Albania, where 20 border and migration police received training sessions such as pre-screening of migrants, profiling of possible terrorist fighters and detection of criminal offenses.

Similar workshops will also be held in Shkodra in the north and Gjirokastra in the south, which borders Greece.

The OSCE said the measure is taken "in light of the increased migrant flows through the Western Balkans." Trainers at the workshops were mainly from the Albanian Europol National Unit and the Albanian Border and Migration Police.

Though Albania is not a main transit route yet, its neighboring countries in the Western Balkans region such as Macedonia have seen thousands of refugees at its borders. Endi
