Sri Lanka urges dialogue from int'l community to discuss terrorism following Brussels attacks

Xinhua, March 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday called for an urgent dialogue from the international community to discuss fight against terrorism following the deadly terror attacks in Brussels on Tuesday.

In a condolence letter sent to the Prime Minister of Belgium Charles Michel, Wickremesinghe said that Sri Lanka understands well the difficulties faced by the international community concerning atrocities of this nature as Sri Lanka, too, had experienced the horror of terror attacks.

Sri Lankan troops fought a 30-year civil conflict against Tamil Tiger rebels which ended with the defeat of the rebels in May 2009.

"We believe that this incident highlights the need for an urgent dialogue on terrorism that must include steps in addressing it effectively," Wickremesinghe said.

"As always, we have nothing but condemnation for such acts of violence."

A series of explosions ripped through the Brussels airport and a metro station close to the European Union institutions on Tuesday, killing at least 34 people and injured many others. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Sri Lanka has beefed up security at its main international airport on Wednesday to prevent a possible terrorist attack. Endit
